LaidBack London – Handcrafted Sandals with a Story and a Purpose

From Mombasa to London

LaidBack London began in 2001 when a recent university graduate decided to commute between London and his hometown of Mombasa – an island city along the coast of Kenya. He brought suitcases filled with crafts from local Kenyan artisans back to London's markets. At a time when fast fashion was booming, Mohamed saw the value in offering a product made with traditional craftsmanship – a sandal with a story and a social purpose.

Working with Local Communities

The next year was spent working with a small group of artisans in Kenya to develop a line of handcrafted leather sandals. Authentic and raw in their expression – where the sandals lack perfection, they compensate with charm and character. In 2014, the brand launched its first winter collection with the same ethos: collaboration with local artisans, preservation of traditional craftsmanship, and giving back to the local community.
